September 17th-23rd
In the United States, motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of death among children. In 2012, more than 1,100 children ages 14 years and younger died in motor vehicle crashes, and more than 176,000 were injured. Many of these deaths and injuries could have been prevented.
Data show that:
-Car seat use reduces the risk of death in car crashes by 71% for infants and 54% for toddlers ages 1 to 4.
-Booster seat use reduces the risk for serious injury by 45% for children ages 4 to 8 years.
Read the recent MMWR announcement, CDC feature story, and CDC’s Vital Signs on child passenger safety to learn more about buckling the ones you love in age- and size-appropriate car seats, booster seats, or seat belts. Additionally, you can participate in National Seat Check Saturday on September 23, when drivers with child passengers are encouraged to visit an inspection station to have a certified technician inspect their car seat and give hands-on advice free of charge. Locate a car seat inspection station in your area.
If your child has been absent for an illness they must stop by the clinic to see Mrs. Toerner before going to their classroom in the morning. The students are to be fever free, vomit free and diarrhea free for 24 hours without any medications. This policy is to ensure the health and welfare of each student. Also, please notify the school immediately if your child has a communicable illness or lice. The student will need to be re-checked for lice by Mrs. Toerner before returning to class.
Flu season is here. I would like to remind you of simple precautions you can take to avoid illness in your family. The best way to prevent the spread of flu viruses is to GET VACCINATED. Any person 6 months or older is encouraged to receive the flu vaccine by nasal mist or injection. Wash hands frequently with antibacterial soap and water. Cover your coughs and sneezes. Keep your hands away from your face, and stay home if you are ill. If your student has any of these symptoms, please consult your physician.
Symptoms of the flu include:
• Fever or feeling feverish/chills
• Cough
• Sore throat
• Runny or stuffy nose
• Muscle or body aches
• Headaches
• Fatigue (tiredness)
• Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults.
If you develop the symptoms listed above, call your doctor right away. Antiviral medications can reduce the duration of the illness and help prevent complications, however these medications must be started with in the first 48-72 hours of the onset of symptoms to have a significant effect.

While adults need to eat breakfast each day to perform their best, kids need it even more. Their growing bodies and developing brains need regular refueling often, from food. When kids skip breakfast, they don’t get what they need to be at their best.
Short on time? Eating a wholesome, nutritious morning meal will probably save you time in the long run. By recharging the brain and body, you’ll be more efficient in just about everything you do.
Interestingly, studies show that kids who skip breakfast are tardy and absent from school more often than children who eat breakfast on a regular basis. Preparing a good breakfast can be as quick and easy as splashing some milk over cereal, making oatmeal or a healthy smoothie.
