A student’s educational experience can be as fulfilling or depraved as their teachers and parents allow. Student-centered learning is a top priority in my pedagogical style. Each student learns in their own particular way, and I ensure that my lessons are compatible for each as much as possible. One method I use is active learning, which teaches in a way that keeps students engaged, including hands-on learning and labs, Socratic dialogue as well as teacher-guided student-led discussions. The proverbial “Sage on the Stage” is not my preferred method of instruction, but rather one of small-group problem solving whenever possible.
Something that many students today lack is a challenging learning environment. Not an environment that is difficult, but one that creates a sense of gratification by having completed the task and one in which the student is more virtuous and knowledgeable having experienced it. One of my goals as a teacher is to show students the progress of their incorporation of learning objectives over the course of their education and to demonstrate their upward travel in their path toward sainthood. Critical thinking is a skill all of my students will use and develop, asking “why” and “how” but more importantly asking “what do I think?”
Catholic education creates a unique opportunity to students because it allows their teachers to equip them with the tools they need for holiness and success, and allows teachers to act as positive role-models through virtue and objective morality, which is a feature that some other schools appear to ignore. I likewise ensure to never neglect the extracurricular and personal needs of my students, as each have their own social and medical needs, their own life outside of the classroom, as well as their unique emotional ups and downs. An effective educator must have a level of understanding and awareness of these facets of a student’s life to help shape them in a differentiated way, which is what is best for the child. While there is a level of formality between student and teacher, I also believe teachers have a deeper positive impact upon the students of the school whenever they serve as a coach and club sponsor, as well as whenever serving as a student’s mentor.
Message to the Parents:
I welcome parents to fulfill the opportunity throughout the academic year to positively impact their child’s educational experience through participation whenever possible, which can be done in a myriad of ways, such as reading novels along with their child, serving as parent sponsor of clubs and sports, and asking about what the student learned in class and carrying on that discussion on the way home in the car. Communication with parents is a key part of any educator’s responsibilities, and it is my goal to grow ever more effective in providing the best degree of communication to meet the needs of each family. Parents are welcome to contact me to inquire more about how they can take an active role in your child’s classroom experience, as I am more than willing to suggest great ways to bring the content alive from home. I am incredibly excited to be of service for all of my students in the coming year!
Extracurricular Activities:
I regularly volunteer at military history museums and give public educational demonstrations all over the state of Texas. I enjoy reading deep level history books and writing theses arguments to challenge narratives. I also like dressing and behaving as gentlemanly as I am able, and would love to share what I have learned with my male and female students, as God made us to complement one another, and we please Him in living in accordance with our nature.
